I'm new to EVs and I'm wondering how those EREV things work on long drives. Like, when the battery dies, does the gas engine just kick in and keep you going? With the Scout, they say you can go 500 miles with a full tank and a full battery. But what if you're completely out of both? Can you just fill up the gas tank and still get 500 miles, or do you need to charge the battery too? I don't really know how the Harvester system works, but if any EREV owners could share their experiences, that'd be awesome. Specifically, I'm curious about how much range you lose if you can only fill up the gas tank.

The Scout's EREV system is based on the Harvester system. In this system, a gas engine charges the battery instead of driving the wheels directly. When you're on a long trip and the battery dies, the gas engine keeps you moving by making electricity. But if both the gas tank and the battery are empty, filling up just the gas tank won't get you back to full range because the battery needs to be charged first. Yes, with EREVs, the gas engine kicks in when the battery is depleted, but you’ll still rely on both for max range. If you're out of both, you'll need to recharge for the full 500 miles, just filling the gas tank won’t get you that far.
